Vees win big in game two

A strong finish to game one on Friday carried over for the Coquitlam Express in the first period of game two, but the top-ranked Penticton Vees pulled away as the game grew on.

The Vees scored four times in the second and three more in the third to earn a 9-2 win on Saturday and take a 2-0 series lead.

Coquitlam led 12-11 in shots after the opening period, but Penticton held a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes thanks to a pair of powerplay goals.

Chris Klack scored 1:56 into the game and Massimo Rizzo dazzled to double the Vees lead about 12 minutes later.

While 2-1 was the final score on Friday, it was far from the end of the line Saturday. The Vees scored four more times in the second period — courtesy of Jackson Keane, Taylor Ward, Dakota Boutin and Rizzo — to take a 6-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Ward scored again 1:10 into the third, and Marcus Mitchell scored to stretch the lead to 8-1 minutes later.

Brock Hamm was pulled from the Coquitlam crease after allowing Mitchell's goal, which was the Vees eighth on 29 shots. Hamm was second star in game one on Friday when he made 37 saves on 39 shots.

Just 2:37 after backup Clay Stevenson entered the game, Ward scored to complete the hat trick.

The Express scored shortly after Ward's third goal to make the score 9-2. Coquitlam's goals came from Jack Lippis and Eric Linell.

The powerplay was clicking for Penticton on Saturday, as they went 4-9 on the man advantage. They were 4-4 on the penalty kill as well.

Offensively, Ward led the way with three goals and two assists. Nick Leivermann put up four assists, while Rizzo had three points and four other Vees had a multi-point game.

Adam Scheel earned his second win in as many nights in goal. After needing only 18 saves on Friday, he stopped 20 of 22 shots in game two.

Penticton now sits right where they want to be as the series shifts to Coquitlam for games three and four. The series resumes on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. puck drop at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre.
