Vipers take BCHL-best battle

The Vernon Vipers were the better team on Saturday night when they visited the Penticton Vees, in a matchup of the two top teams in the BCHL.

Vernon scored in all three periods, including three times in the second, en route to a 5-2 win over Penticton at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Both teams entered the marque matchup red hot. The Vipers have now won six of their past seven games, and the Vees, meanwhile, are 13-2-0-1 since Jan. 5 despite the loss.

Niko Karamanis scored the only goal of the opening frame at 9:51 of the first — a period the Vipers were outshot 12-6.

The teams traded goals for most of the second period. After Cameron Trott scored early in the frame to double Vernon's lead, Cassidy Bowes scored to pull Penticton back within one about nine minutes later.

Michael Young scored on the powerplay about three minutes after that to give the Vipers a two-goal cushion again. However, Vees captain Owen Sillinger scored his team-leading 27th goal just 46 seconds after that, which also came on the powerplay.

Derek Brown scored in the final two minutes of the second to give Vernon a 4-2 lead, a blow that Penticton inevitably didn't bounce back from in the third.

Jesse Lansdell capped the 5-2 score for Vernon with a goal midway through the third, and the Vipers returned the favour from period one by double the Vees 12-6 in shots.

Shots were 34-33 for Vernon on the night. Both teams went 1-2 on the powerplay.

As play around the BCHL wraps up on Saturday, the Vees (35-11-2-3) and Vipers (35-13-1-4) both find themselves tied atop the league standings with 75 points. Penticton has seven games to go in the regular season while Vernon has five.

The Vees finish a three-game home stand on Wednesday when they host the Coquitlam Express, who have 14 wins in 53 games.

Penticton plays two straight games against Coquitlam, in fact, and there's a good chance those two teams could meet in the first round of the BCHL playoffs.

For the Vipers, meanwhile, they're off until Friday when they visit the Powell River Kings to begin a three-game Coastal division trip.
