Warriors' tough weekend

Every weekend, every game seems to be equally important for teams in the ultra-competitive BC Hockey League Interior Division.

Just three points separate the top five teams in the Interior heading into play this weekend.

The West Kelowna Warriors, who lead the league with eight wins and share top spot overall with 16 points, have two key games over the weekend, both at Royal LePage Place.

They host newly minted division rival Wenatchee Wild Friday night before a date Sunday afternoon against the Island Division's Nanaimo Clippers.

It's been a roller coaster of a start for the Wild who have neither won, nor lost more than two games in a row. They head into Friday's tilt at Royal LePage Place on a two-game winning streak.

The Wild, like the Warriors, are coming off a 3-2 victory in which they clawed their way back from a 2-0 deficit.

"They're a real good team. They can really skate and they don't give up a lot," said Warriors head coach Rylan Ferster of the Wild.

"Their penalty kill is always really good too. We'll certainly have our hands full. The obviously make our division even tougher."

The Warriors come into the weekend playing some of their best hockey of the young season. They've won four in a row and seven of their last nine to move into a first place tie with Vernon atop the Interior.

Ferster, never one to draw too much attention to streaks, says the team has been taking advantage of some breaks over the past several games.

But, he did point to one area of the game that has been really good the past few weeks.

"I think one of the keys is our special teams have been really good over the last six games.

"Our penalty has been pretty good, and our power play had been pretty good too there for a while."

Over the past four games, the penalty kill has allowed just two goals in 25 chances. Their penalty kill is number one in the league, killing off better than nine of every 10 chances against.

Friday's tilt kicks off a four game homestand for the Warriors, who will host Nanaimo Sunday afternoon, Langley Tuesday and Cowichan Valley next Friday.
