Sun stay perfect, nip pesky Rebels

The Westshore Rebels gave the Okanagan Sun a bit of a scare in the provincial capital.

The winless Rebels stayed with the unbeaten Sun for most of Saturday's contest before finally falling 37-26.

The win improved the Sun record to 3-0 and a first place tie with the Langley Rams who beat the VI Raiders 36-28 Saturday in Nanaimo.

Quarterback Cam Bedore, who took control of the offence in the second and fourth quarters, engineered four touchdown drives on the afternoon - the decisive drive coming with less than three minutes to go when he hit Deion Bain.

Bain's first junior touchdown came with just 1:23 left on the clock giving the Sun an insurmountable 37-20 lead. The Rebels would get a late touchdown to make it 37-26 but couldn't get any closer.

Theo Deezar, who played all but a few series in last weekend's 17-3 win over Nanaimo hit Tommy Howes with a 60 yard touchdown strike in the opening quarter to give the Sun an early 7-0 lead.

It would be the only scoring of the opening quarter and the only touchdown Deezar would engineer on the afternoon.

The Rebels tied things up early in the second quarter following a fumble by Sun running back Dillon Fortune.

Fortune redeemed himself a few minutes later when he capped off a long drive with a three yard plunge to put the Sun up again by seven.

The Rebels again marched down the field to tie the score before Bedore sneaked in from one yard out to put the Sun ahead 21-14 at the half.

The only scoring in the third quarter came when Victoria conceded a safety while in punt formation out of their own end zone.

A wild fourth quarter saw each team again trade touchdowns.

Bedore touched off the scoring with a three yard strike to Jesse Kendall to put the Sun up 30-14.

Despite two late Rebels touchdowns, the home side was unable to get closer than 10 points.

"A wins a win," tweeted Sun safety Jack Rush after the game.

"But we have to be better. That fourth quarter by me won't happen again. Leaders don't make mental errors."

The Sun will conclude their mini two game road trip in Kamloops Saturday night before hosting the Langley Rams back at the Apple Bowl August 24 in what will likely be a showdown for top spot in the BCFC.
