Straight up football. No new wrinkles, no new plays, no tricks.
That’s how Okanagan Sun head coach Travis Miller describes his team’s preparation for Saturday’s BC Football Conference semi-final match up with the Valley Huskers.
It will be the third meeting between the conference rivals and the second in three weeks but, despite the hours of tape each team possess, Miller says don’t expect to see any surprises from his sideline.
“I don’t think we’re going to tweak or change anything. We’re going to make sure we are better at what we do week-by-week,” said Miller prior to practice earlier this week.
“Right now that’s handing the ball off to (Elelyon) Noa and making sure he has the best offensive line support, or our quarterback delivering the ball to our receivers.
“We’re not necessarily going to change our identity going into the playoffs but we’re going to make sure it’s the best version of who we are.”
That means pounding the ball with Noa with likely a larger contribution from his running mate Tristan Peddle.
With the pursuit of records no longer in play, the Sun will have no need to overwork their star running back. So, don’t expect to see him carry the ball 37 times as he’s averaged over the last two games.
“At this point, we’re at a stage where we want to get his reps and elongate his season for the next four weeks and see what we can do with some other players.
“Hopefully, they’ll step up.”
The Sun have had their way with the Huskers this season, outscoring them 86-14 over two meetings, including a 60-14 shellacking at the Apple Bowl two weeks ago.
Despite the lopsided scores, Miller says they are not looking past the Huskers.
“I think in past years we have played that where we look four weeks ahead and I think the fact of the matter is, we did beat them fairly handily the last game of the season, but we don’t anticipate that being the same team so everybody is focused on getting through this game with a one point win.”
The winner of Saturday’s game will face the winner of the other semi-final between the depleted Westshore Rebels and Langley Rams.
Saturday’s game kicks off at 4 p.m. at the Apple Bowl.
