Four weeks ago an overpowering offence led the Okanagan Sun to a 70-0 lambasting of the visiting Prince George Kodiaks.
Saturday in Prince George, it was the defence’s turn to put in a dominating performance.
And, they needed just 25 minutes, turning five Prince George first quarter possessions into five turnovers in a 37-6 win that flattered the home side.
The offence, that looked so good at home against the Kodiaks sputtered much of the night, scoring all the points they would need in the first half.
The Sun secondary picked off four passes in the opening quarter and forced the Kodiaks to turn the ball over on downs on a fifth possession. But, despite the turnover, they managed just 17 points in the quarter.
Elelyon Noa, the nation’s leading rusher, turned a Vicente Ferreira interception into six points, capping off a four play, 43 yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run.
He broke off one long run in the third quarter but, after the opening drive, was not a factor.
After Kenley Williams took an interception down to the Kodiaks 10, the Sun were unable to move the ball, settling for Liam Attwood’s 18-year field goal.
Moments later, Easton Fenske grabbed the third interception of the quarter, scampering 45 yards to pay dirt for a 17-0 lead.
Williams was at it again near the end of the quarter taking his second interception all the way down to the Kodiaks two.
However, the Prince George defence held, stuffing Noa three times short of the goal line.
Marek Filipek got the passing game going in the second quarter, hooking up with Jordayne Falconer for 40 and 61 yard touchdown strikes then, with two seconds left on the clock, his Ben Chomolok from seven yards out to make it 37-3 at the half.
A Kodiaks field goal 10 minutes into the fourth was the only scoring of the second half.
The Sun, 8-0 on the season, close out the regular season with a pair of games at home.
They host Chilliwack next Saturday before closing out the regular season in what should be a first place showdown with the Westshore Rebels Sept. 28.
