Battle of unbeaten teams as Okanagan Sun face Valley Huskers

Sun take show on the road

Defence, or more particularly which defence can subdue the opposition’s big weapons, could be the deciding factor in this weekend’s BC Football Conference showdown between the Okanagan Sun (2-0) and Valley Huskers (1-0).

The teams meet in a key early season clash in Chilliwack Saturday evening.

The Sun come into the game with the league’s top running game and leading rusher while the Huskers feature one of the top quarterbacks in the league.

Elelyon Noa leads the league in rushing with 236 yards and total yards with 297. He also leads the league with six touchdowns, all on the ground.

It will be up to the Huskers front seven to stop Noa at the point of attack and not let him get to the second level of the defence when he is at his most dangerous.

The Sun secondary will be tasked with shutting down a Huskers passing attack that shredded the Broncos a week ago.

Tyran Duval threw for 332 yards and five touchdowns while his favourite target, Steven Koniuck caught six passes for 130 yards and four touchdowns.

The also have the ability to trot out three quality quarterbacks at any time. Rookie Marek Filipek went the distance in the opening night 22-17 win over Langley and split time with veteran Liam Kroeger last weekend.

Third string Ben Chomolok, a three-year starter in Nanaimo, is waiting in the wings if need be.

Saturday’s game is the second of three straight away from the Apple Bowl for the Sun.

They return to the island to face the Westshore Rebels next weekend before returning home to host the Prince George Kodiaks Saturday, Aug. 17.
