The Okanagan Sun ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown, then ran roughshod over the Westshore Rebels in a 62-6 shellacking Saturday afternoon.
Matthew Sibley fielded the opening kickoff at his own 15, cut to the right and rambled down the right sideline 95 yards to open the floodgates.
The Rebels, playing their first game in almost two years, were outmatched and outclassed in every facet of the game. In fact, their opening two punts from deep inside their own end travelled a combined 23 yards.
After Dominic Britton threw an interception on his first pass deep inside the Rebels end, he took advantage of the second bad kick, marching the Sun 29 yards in eight plays, capped off by Malcolm Miller's five-yard run.
Liam Attwood closed out the quarter with a 35 yard field goal putting the Sun up 17.
Two more Attwood field goals from 31 and 13 yards and a 25-yard Britton to Mike O'Shea dart put the Sun up 32-0 at the half.
The Britton/O'Shea combination struck again on each of the Sun's next two possessions from 32 and 10 yards out to put the up by 48.
O'Shea caught four balls on the day for 100 yards and the three majors. He has five touchdowns over the opening two weeks of the season.
Alex Douglas replaced Britton midway through the quarter, engineering two more short touchdown drives. Kaiden Banfield ran in from four yards out then Douglas kept himself for a one-yard major.
The Rebels broke the shutout bid in the dying moments with all the Sun starters on the bench.
Unofficially, Miller also ran for more than 100 yards while backup Jevan Garwood broke a couple of big gains, nearing the century mark himself.
Defensively, the Sun help the Rebels in check for much of the day, led by a stout front seven.
Kelon Thomas registered a pair of quarterback sacks, Tyler Going recovered a fumble on a botched third down snap and Romario Reid blocked a punt.
Saturday's game, the "home opener" for the Sun, was played in Chilliwack while the Interior Health region remains under tighter COVID-19 restrictions than the rest of the province.
The Sun, 2-0, have scored 102 points in their opening two victories while allowing a mere 14.
They take their perfect record into Langley for a date with the Rams next Sunday evening.
