5 Sun place in CJFL top 50

Five members of the BC Football Conference Okanagan Sun find themselves ranked in the top 50 of individual players in Canadian Junior Football.

The top 50 was released by the CJFL over social media this week.

Sun players cracking the top 50 include:

Linebacker Conor Richard is number 27 in the top 50.

Richard, 20, is in his second year with the Sun, and comes to the team from Clarksville, Tennessee. Appearing in all 12 games last year, the 5’10” 205 lb Richard recorded 32 tackles, two sacks, three interceptions, and two blocked kicks. He also worked his way onto the offensive side of the ball, and rushed for 18 yards in five attempts, spread over two games.

Defensive Back Beck Fullerton - #35

Fullerton is preparing for his final season in Sun colours. The 6’2” 220 lb DB from Winnipeg was the only one of the five players to have appeared on last year’s Top 50 list, and has moved up from his #38 ranking in 2016. In 29 career games with the Sun, Fullerton has amassed 53 tackles along with 11 interceptions, including two of those returned for a pick-six.

Linebacker Eli Haynes - #39

Haynes is also entering his fifth and final season with the Sun, and also hails from Kelowna. The 6’0” 225 lb former KSS Owl appeared in all 12 (regular season + playoffs) games for the Sun last season, and picked up 43 tackles, with three sacks and a forced fumble.

Defensive Lineman Cory McCoy - #43

20-year-old McCoy is entering his third season with the Sun. The 6’4” 240 lb Kelowna native is a graduate of the Rutland Raiders, and set a career high last season, recording 6 sacks in the regular season. In two playoff games, McCoy recorded nine solo tackles, and recovered a fumble.

Running Back Brenden Hansen - #47

The 20-year-old Hansen is starting his second season with the Sun. The 5’10” 190 lb running back from Okotoks, Alberta played in eight games for the Sun last season, where he rushed for 479 yards, including one touchdown. He also caught 13 passes, two of them for touchdowns, and accumulated 236 yards through the air.

The Okanagan Sun kick off the 2017 season Saturday night when they host the reigning BCFC champion Westshore Rebels.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. at the Apple Bowl.
