Sun in a tough spot

The Okanagan Sun find themselves between the proverbial rock and a hard place.

Comfortably atop the BC Football Conference just three weeks ago, the Sun find themselves needing a win Sunday just to host a playoff game.

That's what three straight losses will get you.

The Sun host the Langley Rams in the regular season finale.

The winner will host the loser the following week in one of two BCFC semi-finals.

Mistakes, turnovers and penalty, after penalty, after penalty have hurt the Sun, especially on offence.

Everything came to a head last Saturday in Nanaimo, when the Sun turned the ball over five times while committing a team record 32 penalties.

"The biggest part is discipline. Clearly, we haven't done a good enough job in practice of keeping emotions in check," said head coach Ben Macauley.

"We want guys to play with emotion and passion, but when it gets the better of you, and causes you to make mistakes, then it's gone too far."

All this has led to even more struggles for an offence which has had a hard time with consistency all season long.

The team has managed just 10 points over the past two full games. The lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter of last week's 14-8 loss to the VI Raiders.

"It's been a tough three weeks," said Macauley, "but it's not all negative.

"If things go a couple of different ways, if we smarten up and play more disciplined games against both Nanaimo and Victoria, I think we're looking at being 8-1 and sitting in first place."

He said it not only speaks to the parity of the league, but also that the Sun have a lot more control of their own destiny than they've shown.

The Sun and Rams have met once this year, a 15-10 Sun victory in Langley back on Aug. 27.

That, ironically, was the last time the Sun tasted victory.

But, while the playoffs don't officially start for another week, Macauley knows week 10 is a playoff game.

"We're playing for, not only home field advantage, but we're playing with a little bit of a chip on our shoulder with something to prove.

"We figured out exactly what our character is like the last couple of weeks and that's something we can change. It's a measuring stick for how resilient our group is, how do we respond when things really do get tough."

Sunday's game kicks off a 1 p.m. at the Apple Bowl.
