Hospital Wants More

  • One of Canada's top health-care experts says spending more money to expand the emergency ward at Surrey Memorial Hospital won't fix the problem of overcrowding. The Fraser Health Authority fired its CEO earlier this week, saying Bob Smith had failed to implement short-term fixes at the hospital. And the health minister has now instructed the FHA to spend $28 million to expand the Surrey's ER. Full story
  • The B.C. Centre for Disease Control is warning doctors to look out for a new symptom related to the deadly avian flu outbreak in Southeast Asia. At least two children in Vietnam who died of bird flu, had diarrhea and seizures rather than respiratory symptoms, related to the deadly virus. Full story
  • A prominent Vancouver family doctor has been arrested and charged with sexual assault. Sixty four year old Dr. Gabriel Yong is accused of sexually assaulting two teenage girls. One incident with a 15 year old took place in 1988. An 18 year old was abused three years later. The doctor is a former member of the parks board and former head of the Vancouver Medical Association. Police won't say if the two were his patients, but do indicate there could be more victims.
