New Westminster police seize drugs estimated at $2.4 million

A New Westminster police officer stopped a suspicious vehicle - and discovered drugs estimated to have a street value of $2.4 million.

A traffic stop in New Westminster resulted in the seizure of drugs — believed to be fentanyl, crystal methamphetamine, heroin and codeine — having an estimated street value of $2.4 million.

The New Westminster Police Department reports that one of its officers was on patrol on Sunday, Nov. 27 and spotted a suspicious vehicle that had both front-end damage and was registered as failing to stop for police in a neighbouring municipality.

“The officer conducted a traffic stop to speak to the driver,” said a NWPD press release. “In the course of the traffic stop, the officer found a large quantity of drugs.”

According to the NWPD, the driver was arrested and police seized approximately: eight kilograms of suspected fentanyl powder; 500 grams of suspected fentanyl pills; 1.5 kilograms of suspected crystal methamphetamine; 1.5 kilograms of suspected heroin; and 400 millilitres of codeine. It’s estimated the street value of the drugs seized was approximately $2.4 million.

“Drug offences negatively impact our communities at many different levels, and we’re very impressed with the exceptional work that was done by this officer,” said NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Justine Thom. “We want to let criminals know they’re not wanted in New Westminster.”

According to the NWPD, the investigation into the seized drugs is ongoing.
