A man leapt from a runaway motorhome in Nanaimo early Wednesday after he discovered the brakes had failed.
Nanaimo RCMP said the man was driving the large motorhome eastward down the steep incline of Dawes Street when he realized he had no brakes.
He jumped out of the vehicle, which continued for several metres before hitting a guard rail and power pole on Newcastle Avenue. The vehicle came to a stop with its front end hanging over a dropoff above the Harbourfront Walkway.
“He’s very lucky,” said Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Gary O’Brien, noting the outcome could have been much worse had the driver stayed inside and the vehicle fallen into the walkway below.
“He should be buying a lottery ticket.”
O’Brien said the 5:30 a.m. crash was the result of a mechanical failure. The driver showed no signs of impairment and is not facing any charges.
The motorhome’s front end was damaged. The vehicle was towed from Newcastle Avenue shortly after the crash.
