Man arrested after allegedly spitting on baby at Vancouver bus stop

Stranger spits on baby

Police in Vancouver arrested a man Friday who allegedly spat on a baby.

In a press release issued Saturday, Const. Tania Visintin says officers were called to a bus stop Friday afternoon near Main Street and Broadway in the city's Mount Pleasant area, after a mother reported her 13-month-old child had been spat on.

“A mom and her baby boy were among a number of people waiting at a bus stop ... around 3 p.m. when a stranger approached and began yelling at people to get out of his way,” Const. Visintin said.

“As the young mom moved her stroller to make room, the suspect allegedly stopped and deliberately spat into the stroller, hitting her 13-month-old child.”

Officers arrived on scene and were able to locate the suspect and arrest him.

Const. Visintin says the suspect, Glen Asselin, is “well-known” to the VPD. He's been charged with assault, and he remains in custody at this time.

According to online court records, Asselin had been recently released on bail on Nov. 8, despite having a handful of outstanding assault charges.

He current faces charges of assault and uttering threats connected to a December 2018 incident in Vancouver, assault and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose from a January 2019 incident in Vancouver, and another charge of assault stemming from a February 2019 incident in Burnaby.

And while he was released on bail with no financial obligation on Nov. 8, he failed to appear at his court date on Nov. 14 and a warrant had been issued for his arrest.

He's scheduled to next appear in court Saturday afternoon.
