Interior Health says there are no plans to close ER in Grand Forks after politicians raise alarm

Fighting to save their ER

UPDATE 5:45 p.m.

Interior Health is responding to elected officials in the Boundary about the rumoured closure of the emergency department at the hospital in Grand Forks.

“Interior Health has no plans to permanently close the emergency department at Boundary District Hospital in Grand Forks,” said Lannon De Best, executive director for clinical operations for the Kootenay Boundary.

“The hospital is an important resource for the Boundary area and we continue with our recruitment efforts to bring more health care workers to the area.”

Elected officials in Grand Forks are calling on the province to step in and stop the potential closure of the city's emergency room.

With rumours swirling the emergency room at Boundary Regional Hospital in Grand Forks may close, officials with the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary met Wednesday to discuss the matter.

"We are extremely concerned over the possibility of patients being forced to travel over the Paulson Pass to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail or the two-snd-a-half hours to Kelowna to receive urgent care," said Electoral Area C director Grace McGregor in a news release.

"We are putting immediate pressure on the Province of B.C. to address this threat to our facility and the impacts it could have on residents."

There were published reports an 82-year-old man with a broken hip was forced to wait nearly 60 hours for an ambulance to transport him from hospital in Grand Forks to Trail for surgery.

The hospital in Grand Forks has a catchment area of more than 9,000 people. Its inpatient beds have been closed since March due to a lack of nursing staff, according to officials.

“The committee thanks Everett Baker, Mayor of Grand Forks, for his tremendous ongoing efforts to advocate for his community’s health care needs,” added McGregor.

“The whole Boundary region joins him in this fight to keep our ER.”
