Conservation officers confirm predatory nature of bear attack near Dawson Creek

The BC Conservation Service has confirmed three people injured by a black bear Monday evening in Dawson Creek were victims of a "rare" predatory attack.

Conservation officers came to the conclusion following an investigation into the incident.

"Conservation officers examined the attack site – which included taking photographs, measurements and collecting evidence - and interviewed victims and witnesses as part of the investigation, which determined the attack was predatory in nature," a asocial media statement indicated.

"The adult male black bear that was killed on site was acting alone. Physical evidence found during the necropsy of the bear confirmed it was the offending animal."

RCMP shot and killed the bear who was guarding two injured women and could not be scared away.

A member of the Get Bear Smart Society reached the same conclusion of a predatory attack.

"COS encourages anyone recreating in bear country to take precautions and equip themselves in case they encounter wildlife.

"This includes being aware of your surroundings, such as noticing potential signs of bears in the area, carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it, as well as taking along noise devices...especially in the backcountry and if there is limited visibility on a trail."

The two women suffered critical injuries while a teenage boy was also injured in the attack.
