Unsupervised L driver caught at 113 in a 60 km/h zone in Coquitlam

L driver at 113 in 60 zone

Coquitlam RCMP hope several weeks away from the wheel will help a new driver fully understand the rules of the road.

An 'L' driver received a four-month driving prohibition after being caught at nearly double the speed limit through a business warehouse area of the city.

Police clocked the driver excessively speeding to 113 km/h in the 60 km/h zone on Sept. 16.

Police said the driver also didn't have their L properly and visibly displayed on the grey Honda Accord.

And they didn't have a qualified supervisor inside.

All of the above culminated into the four-month prohibition, as well as the impoundment of the vehicle and an excessive speeding ticket. The amount was not disclosed, but they can range from $368 to $483.

"According to the BC (Motor Vehicle Act), an L driver must have a suitable adult passenger to supervise their driving abilities," said Coquitlam RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Alexa Hodgins.

The Act states a Class 7L driver can not operate a vehicle unless there's an adult passenger aged 25 or older with a valid licence inside.

As well, the supervisor must be either in the front passenger seat or in the back seat on the right-hand side.

On average, ICBC's latest statistics available show 27 people died each year between 2016 and 2020 in a fatal crash involving a speeding vehicle.
