It appears it will be several weeks before Highway 8 between Spences Bridge and Merritt will be restored.
Photos published Wednesday morning by the Ministry of Transportation shows part of the roadway completely swallowed by the surging Nicola River.
The provincial government said in an update Tuesday that the highway also lost a bridge. There is no estimated time of reopening.
Motorists seeking to travel between Spences Bridge and Merritt will be required to take Highway 97C to Logan Lake and Ashcroft for the foreseeable future.
The Highway 8 washout is one of several that devastated B.C.’s highway network on Sunday and Monday, severing all links between the Lower Mainland and Interior.
