Work continues on one of largest B.C. highways projects in decades.

A "huge" concrete pour has been completed at Kicking Horse Canyon, as crews construct a bridge to span a gap just east of Golden, B.C.

“Using a 48-metre boom pump, workers poured about 260 cubic metres of concrete - enough to fill about 30 concrete trucks. It’s their biggest pour to date on the site,” said Transportation B.C. on social media.

The Kicking Horse Canyon is one of the most rugged and scenic sections of the Trans-Canada Highway, carrying 10,000 vehicles a day in the summer.

The provincial government has gradually been upgrading 21 kilometres of narrow, winding two-lane highway into a modern four-lane 100 km/h standard roadway. It is a part of a larger $837 million project underway upgrading Highway 1 between Kamloops and Alberta.

The final phase of the Kicking Horse Canyon project is now underway, meaning Highway 1 is completely closed until Dec. 1. Closures will continue intermittently beyond that. It is hoped construction will complete in winter 2023/24.
