Paver killed, flagger injured by suspected speeding drunk driver south of Nanaimo

Drunk hits paving crew

Alcohol and speed are believed to have been contributing factors when a vehicle hit two members of a paving crew south of Nanaimo just before midnight Thursday.

When Nanaimo RCMP arrived at the scene near Kipp Road and the Trans-Canada Highway, near the Duke Point Highway, B.C. Ambulance Service paramedics were tending to the two victims.

One died at the scene and the other was transported to hospital with serious injuries. Police said the person who died was doing paving work and the one injured was a flagger.

The driver of the car was detained for questioning by police.

The B.C. Coroners Service has been advised about the incident.

Police said the highway was closed in both directions and traffic was rerouted. The highway reopened at 7 a.m. Friday.
