Driver's panic over spider leads to rollover crash

A driver alarmed by a spider lost control of her vehicle Monday in North Vancouver

An itsy bitsy spider caused a big web of trouble Monday when a driver who noticed the arachnid in her car lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a stump and rolling over in a driveway.

The single-vehicle accident happened around 1 p.m. on Sept. 13 when a woman driving on East Braemar Road in North Vancouver became alarmed by a spider and lost control of her car.

The vehicle left the road and hit a stump in a yard, causing it to flip upside down and land in the driveway of a home at 711 East Braemar.

Luckily, no one was seriously hurt.

“Fortunately, nobody was walking on the sidewalk, or working in our garden, or driveway,” said Gerda Koch, whose driveway the vehicle ended up in.

The driver, a 50-year-old North Vancouver woman who was alone in the car, was taken to hospital but later released, said Sgt. Peter DeVries, spokesman for the North Vancouver RCMP.

Koch said the location has been the scene of a number of accidents.

In this case, DeVries said the accident was an isolated event that did not have anything to do to with road conditions or speed.
