Significant growth at Octopus Creek wildfire, more expected

Octopus fire now 3,192 ha

UPDATE: 1:02 p.m.

The Octopus Creek wildfire near Fauquier has grown significantly, having now reached an estimated 3,192 hectares in size.

The BC Wildfire Service says the situation is "rapidly evolving" and the size of the blaze is expected to increase once visibility allows for an accurate perimeter track to be taken.

"Aggressive fire behaviour continues to be observed, and the fire has expanded again on the north, east, and west flanks. It is very visible from Edgewood, Fauquier, Needles, and surrounding areas," the wildfire service says in its latest update.

Strong winds are expected to increase into the day and will continue to drive aggressive fire behaviour in the Southern Interior and southeast of the province.

"The evening of July 20 was a very challenging day on the Octopus Creek fire, as unprecedented winds drove a significant increase in fire behaviour and rate of spread. BC Wildfire Service crews were forced to pull back from the fire as it rapidly posed a significant safety risk," BCWS reports.

Crews are in the air, assessing trigger points today.

Residents were successfully evacuated from Fauquier Tuesday evening as the Octopus Creek wildfire continues to burn south of the Arrow Lake community.

The BC Wildfire Service says no structures have been lost since the fire began.

In a morning update, the service says officers are currently in the air, assessing trigger points.

Heavy equipment will resume work establishing machine-built contingency lines around the town, and specialists have mobilized structure protection units to the town.

At this time, lightning is listed as the cause of the blaze.

The wildfire, which was discovered July 14, is still estimated to have burned 2,940 hectares.

The wildfire service says elevated winds Tuesday, paired with extremely dry fuels, significantly increased fire activity and the fire's rate of spread.

The blaze is still highly visible from Edgewood, Fauquier, Needles, and surrounding areas.
