Crews could undertake more planned burns to control the Flat Lake wildfire

Flat Lake: Planned ignitions

UPDATE 3:15 p.m.

More planned burns could be used to try to control the progress of the Flat Lake fire. The proposed ignitions area will be located south of the South Bishop and Eighty Three Lakes, west of the powerlines, and north and parallel to the Stormy Road.

Similar action by crews on Friday proved successful on a small area of the southeast flank.

12 helicopters are available to continue bucketing the fire and heaving equipment is working to establish access on the southeast side.

The blaze is listed at an estimated 14,000 hectares.

Heavy equipment and ground crews are trying to construct fire guards around the Flat Lake wildfire, threatening homes in the Gustafsen Lake and Neilson Lake areas southwest of 100 Mile House.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District issued an evacuation order Saturday for properties in the Electoral Area “E” (Bonaparte Plateau).

The Cariboo Regional District has also issued an evacuation order and an evacuation alert.

BCWS said structural protection specialists are assessing and deploying structural protection units on properties on the west side of Highway 97.

The BCWS has deployed 35 firefighters, three helicopters and 64 pieces of heavy equipment in the area.

The Flat Lake fire covers an estimated 14,000 hectares and saw increased fire activity Friday.
