Fire near Castlegar now fully contained

Merry Creek being held

UPDATE 2 p.m. July 4

The Merry Creek fire is now 100 percent contained, according to the BC Wildfire Service.

The fire was estimated at 20.0 hectares and is listed as being held.

All earlier evacuation orders and alerts have been lifted.


UPDATE 7 p.m. July 3

The BC Wildfire Service reports the Merry Creek fire is now 90 percent contained.

It’s listed at 20 hectares in size, and BCWS said there was no growth overnight Friday.

Highway 3 has reopened to single lane alternating traffic between Highway 3B and Crestview Cres.


ORIGINAL 10:03 a.m. JULY 2

The Merry Creek fire continues to burn out of control just outside of Castlegar.

Highway 3 remains closed in both directions
between Highway 3B and Crestview Cres. for 25.2 km. The road is closed to all traffic except emergency vehicles. Detour via Trail and Rossland.

As of Friday morning the Merry creek fire is listed as a fire of note at 15 hectares and is believed to have been caused by a person.

BC Wildfire Service has two helicopters and 20 ground crew personnel battling the blaze.

Residents living in the Regional District of Central Kootenay Area J just outside of the City of Castlegar boundaries are under an evacuation order, 31 properties in total.
