SFU hit by cyber attack, personal information of students and staff may have been accessed

Cyber attack on university

Simon Fraser University is warning the school community after a cyber attack took place on one of its servers.

The school issued an advisory on Tuesday stating the server had been accessed on Feb. 3 and was shut down Feb. 5, according to CTV News Vancouver.

The hackers gained access to spreadsheet data containing personal information for a number of current and past students. Information for those who applied to the school was also accessed.

SFU suggests approximately 200,000 people were impacted. A list of data categories that were potentially accessed in the hack is available here. This includes students who were enrolled from 2012 to 2020, those who applied for financial aid from 1988 to 2017, as well as undergraduate and graduate honour awards going back as far as 1968 and more.

The hackers were not able to access banking details, passwords and social insurance numbers during the cyber attack.

"For the majority of those impacted, the personal identifiable information is their student/employee ID number and at least one other data element," reads a statement from SFU.

This other information could be related to their admission or academic standing and according to the school, the risk of identity theft is low however those impacted are advised to monitor their accounts and memberships for the next couple of months.

"We recognize how frustrating it is for individuals who have had personal data exposed," SFU said, adding that security is a high priority.

"Cyber attack attempts are on the rise with increasingly sophisticated methods to gain entry into IT systems. In response, the university has been steadily increasing the strength of our institutional information security systems and continues to do so.”

Those who have been impacted will be directly notified if they have an active email on file.

If you have an SFU ID and password, you can go online to see if your data has been accessed. You can also contact SFU’s IT services help-desk at [email protected] or at 1-778-782-8888.

A full forensic analysis will be completed along with help from the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for B.C.
