Cougar attacks, kills dog

A dog was attacked and killed by a cougar in a backyard in the Kootenays over the weekend.

Police and conservation officers were called Sunday at 5:45 p.m. for the incident in the 600 block of Isabella Crescent in Trail, B.C.

Officers located and put down the cougar without further incident.

“A joint investigation discovered the cougar's feeding den in a small section of forest near the attack,” said Sgt. Mike Wicentowich. “Investigators believed that the young cougar may have been separated from his mother which resulted in him to begin hunting available prey within the city limits. This is unusual behaviour for cougars who are generally shy and secluded animals.”
