Man seriously injured after being attacked by bear while in tent

Bear attacks man in tent

A man was seriously injured by a bear attack in a remote area outside Lillooet on Sunday.

Chris Doyle of the BC Conservation Officer Service says the man was attacked while inside his tent at roughly 7 a.m. on Mount Maclean.

“The man was with his dog and hiking partner, camping in separate tents, when the victim woke up to a noise outside of his tent,” said Doyle. “He yelled at the bear and was attacked.”

The victim and his friend hiked to another area to call for help and were eventually picked up by a helicopter. The man was treated in hospital for serious injuries to his arm.

COS investigators visited the attack site and determined that it was a surprise defensive attack, so no efforts were made by officers to capture the bear.
