Fatal crash; hwy reopens

DriveBC reports Highway 1 is now reopened at the scene of this morning's fatal collision near Revelstoke.


UPDATE: 11:15 a.m.

DriveBC reports the Trans-Canada Highway could reopen at 11:45 a.m. following this morning's fatal collision.


UPDATE: 10:25 a.m.

RCMP confirm a highway closure west of Revelstoke is due to a fatal collision on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Police, paramedics and firefighters responded to the rollover collision between a passenger vehicle and a semi about 4:40 a.m. 

The highway remains closed, but DriveBC estimates it may reopen by noon.

The passenger vehicle was engulfed in flames following the impact, while the commercial transport truck rolled.

“Sadly, the driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene by emergency paramedics,” says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey spokesperson for the RCMP Southeast District. “One of our priorities at this time is to establish an identity for the deceased and properly notifying that person’s family.”

Both the RCMP and BC Coroners Service are investigating the incident.

Any witnesses to the crash or motorists with dash-cam footage are asked to contact Revelstoke RCMP at 250-837-5255.


ORIGINAL: 6:35 a.m.

The Trans-Canada Highway is closed this morning near Revelstoke.

DriveBC reports a vehicle incident has closed the highway in both directions at the Boulder Mountain avalanche gate six kilometres west of the city.

There is currently no estimated time of reopening.

A scene assessment is in progress, and no detour is available at this time.

DriveBC is expected to update the situation later this morning.
