Federally-backed COVID alert app now available in app store

COVID app available

As health officials in B.C. worry about another 'exposure cluster' like we saw on the Canada Day long weekend, Ontario has made the new federal COVID Alert app available.

The app was designed by Canadian Digital Services using open code from Shopify and the Apple/Google framework.

The app is voluntary, and tells users if or when they have been in close contact with another user who has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. Officials have stressed that no personal data will be collected.

The app also has the option for the user to send a one-time code alert to others that person may have come in contact with if a user tests positive.

The app is not mandatory for Canadians, and can be downloaded voluntarily from Google’s Play Store and Apple’s App Store.

The government website indicates the app "is designed for you to stay informed about COVID-19 in Canada and determine what actions and next steps you should take."

Recommendations and content are automatically updated based on the latest guidelines related to COVID-19.
