Coquitlam RCMP search for couple who used a paper license plate

Car found with paper plate

The Coquitlam RCMP are looking for a couple who ditched their crashed vehicle with a hilariously bad fake license plate.

The car was involved in a single-vehicle crash when it lost one of its wheels. The collision occurred on January 8 at about 8:20 p.m. on the Mary Hill Bypass in Port Coquitlam. When the police arrived, they found a photocopied license plate under the car's license plate cover.

"One reason that licence plate covers are illegal in BC is that they are often used to obscure what’s underneath," says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with Coquitlam RCMP. "At first blush this licence plate is terribly funny, but there are serious consequences. People with forged plates are often driving with no insurance, or their vehicles are not roadworthy, or both. That’s both unsafe and unfair to other road users who follow the rules and pay their premiums."

The couple quickly left the scene when police arrived, and their car has been seized. The man and woman were last seen driving the 2005 grey Nissan Altima, and are still at large.
