Heavy snow coming down on Coquihalla, Highway 5A closed

Heavy snow hitting Coq

UPDATE 7:40 p.m.

Heavy snow is coming down on the Coquihalla Highway as a frontal system moves across the BC Interior, while DriveBC reports a closure on Highway 5A.

“Heavy flurries will continue tonight as an unstable air mass will set up over the province in the wake of the front,” Environment Canada said in a snowfall alert.

Total snowfall accumulations and 15 to 25 centimetres is expected by Monday morning when the system will weaken.

DriveBC webcams indicate most of the storm has so far missed the Okanagan Connector and Highway 5 between Merritt and Kamloops while heavy snow is blanketing the Coquihalla between Hope and Merritt.

Highway 5A is closed south of Kamloops between Long Lake Rd. and Old Stage Coach Rd. due to the vehicle incident. There is no detour or estimated time of reopening.

Environment Canada has also issued a snowfall warning for Highway 3 between Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass, calling for 15 to 25 cm.

ORIGINAL 2:25 p.m.

DriveBC has sent out alerts warning of major delays on the Coquihalla Highway.

There are multiple spun-out vehicles near the Great Bear snowshed causing heavy delays for travellers.

DriveBC says that conditions are challenging on the Coquihalla. They advise to stay home if you aren't prepared to drive in such conditions, or if you don't have any snow tires on your vehicle.

There is no timetable as to when the situation will be cleared. Castanet will update the story when more information becomes available.
