Eagle dies after eating poisoned pig at landfill

Poisoned eagle dies

Despite the best efforts of veterinarians, a bald eagle has died after being poisoned by a pig carcass on Vancouver Island.

CTV News reports staff at an animal hospital in Nanaimo received eight poisoned eagles Sunday, believed to have fallen ill after eating a dead pig at the local dump.

It appears the pig had been pumped full of sedatives to euthanize the farm animal and dumped like normal garbage.

“It’s really sad,” Ken Langelier told CTV News.

Since Sunday, two more poisoned eagles have been brought to the vet, bringing the total number of affected birds to 10.

While one eagle has now died, Langelier says he thought they would lose more. They are now working to educate the public on the safe disposal of farm animals, as it sounds like the pig was dumped illegally.
