Rockfall during blasting compromises highway, isolates Tofino

Tofino cut off by rockslide

A rockslide has cut off access to Tofino on Vancouver Island.

The highway to Tofino and Ucluelet is closed in both directions after "rockfall compromised the road structure" during a scheduled blast overnight, DriveBC reports.

The closure is near Kennedy Lake on Highway 4, between Toquart Bay Road and Nahmit Forest Service Road, 14 kilometres east of Pacific Rim National Park’s southern boundary.

An engineering assessment is still in progress, and the estimated opening time of the highway is unknown.
