Cops seize $1.9M in cash

Calls about an erratic driver netted Revelstoke RCMP almost $2 million in cash.

Cpl. Mike Halskov said on Sunday, Sept. 8, police were alerted to an erratic driver on Highway 1 about 30 kilometres east of Revelstoke.

Police stopped the vehicle, that had plates from an eastern Canadian province, about 10 km from town and detained the two men in the vehicle under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

“Upon further investigation at the roadside, both individuals were arrested for possession of property obtained by crime,” said Halskov, adding the South East District Roving Traffic Unit and the Specialty Police Service Dog were called in to assist with the investigation.

A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded a significant quantity of Canadian currency totalling $1.9 million. The vehicle and cash were all seized.

The money was moved to a secure location outside of Revelstoke.

The two men were later released on a recognizance for a future court date.

“This is a reminder to motorists that we all have a role to play to keep our highways and communities safe from individuals who may be engaged in criminal activity,” said Halskov. “In this case, police were alerted to the manner in which someone was driving, then acted on that information. Rather than doing the easy thing and simply issue a ticket, the officers employed their investigative skills and disrupted criminal activity.

“This is also a shining example of the quality police work done by the Revelstoke RCMP officers, who recognized that something was not quite right and then engaged more resources to assist their investigation and confirm their suspicions. This demonstrated excellent and seamless cooperation between the detachment and specialty RCMP units that work together throughout British Columbia on a daily basis.”
