Pit bulls maul mini horse

A miniature therapeutic horse was severely injured after being attacked by a pair of pit bulls this week in Nanaimo.

CTV News reports the two dogs broke free from a fenced property neighbouring Eileen Stevens’ hobby farm, and left her mini horse “Hali Berry” without an ear Sunday.

“I have the horse's ear on ice in my fridge,” Stevens told CTV News.

The pony also suffered bite wounds to the back of its legs.

Stevens says she and her brother used a walker and a broom to fight the dogs away, after they rushed outside when they heard the commotion.

After the attack, the miniature horse was rushed to a vet, where it remains under 24-hour care and will likely need extensive surgery to create a new ear canal.

Stevens told CTV she holds no grudge against the dog’s owner, who has stepped up and is paying the vet bills. She said the dogs came from a good home and that the owner was devastated, but turned the dogs over to animal control officers to be euthanized.
