Suspect thankful for arrest

A Victoria man is reportedly thankful for his arrest after starting a four-person brawl while shoplifting.

CTV News reports the man is grateful to be in custody so he can access detox and other supports he could not access on his own.

Police were called to a downtown Victoria shop on Sept. 9 around 7:30 p.m. for a report of a man shoplifting. The suspect started to fight with a security guard who tried to stop him from leaving and was restrained after the store manager and a bystander came to the aid of the guard.

While officers were en route, the suspect claimed to have a weapon on him and threatened to stab the three people who were restraining him. Once police arrived, the man was arrested after a brief struggle.

"The suspect allegedly remarked that he was in the midst of days-long period of drug use and had been unable to successfully access detox and other social supports," VicPD said in a news release on Wednesday.

"The suspect, who was known to the officer from past interactions, told the officer that he was aware that he would have access to support while in custody."

The man is facing several charges, including theft, robbery, assault and resisting arrest.
