Crashed while calling 911

A driver was calling 911 when he collided with a semi on Highway 97 in Prince George Monday morning.

Police received a report just after 6 a.m. advising of a collision between a tractor-trailer and a truck. No serious injuries were reported.

The investigation found that a southbound pickup swerved into the northbound lane in front of a tractor-trailer unit travelling at highway speed. The driver of the unloaded semi managed to swerve to the northbound shoulder to avoid a head-on collision.

The pickup sideswiped the tractor-trailer.

Police say the pickup driver was in the process of dialing 911 in relation to another incident when he drifted into the oncoming lane.

Although the Motor Vehicle Act allows for drivers to use their device to call 911 while driving, police say this incident is a reminder to drivers that the best practice is to always pull over in a safe location to make a phone call, even in an emergency.

The pickup driver was given a ticket for failing to keep right.
