Greens' ride-hailing worries

A Green Party MLA says he has concerns around the introduction of ride-hailing in B.C.

Adam Olsen, who is also a member of the legislature's Select Standing Committee, says while he believes the marketplace should be fair and competitive for all taxi and ride-hailing services, a Class 4 licence restriction is problematic.

“Bringing ride-hailing to Vancouver would be a significant step forward, and the B.C. Greens have been saying since 2016 that in order to make transportation services more accessible for British Columbians there must be a regulatory environment that promotes overall safety and a fair playing field," said Olsen.

"However, I am concerned that the Class 4 licence system creates significant barriers in getting adequate drivers to make this a viable service across the province.

"I have consistently brought this concern up with the Minister, pointing out that we can accomplish the safety standards through means that don’t create unique barriers.”

Operators of both Uber and Lyft have consistently said ride-hailing services will be provided in Vancouver, but the licence restriction will make it hard to get an adequate number of drivers needed to provide it outside Vancouver.
