Tub race breaks record

Sunday's Great International World Championship Bathtub Race was record-setter in Nanaimo.

Justin Lofstrom came ashore in one hour, breaking his own record, set in 2016, CTV News reports

He credited calm conditions and a bump in horsepower to 10 hp for the speedy 58-kilometre trek from Nanaimo Harbour, up the coast to Lantzville and back.

"Some of these guys are doing in excess of 40 miles an hour," he said.

The annual race includes a weekend of festivities, including a parade, fireworks, crafts, food vendors, free concerts and a beer garden.

There was a real race for second place as two tubs hit the beach at the same time, leading to a footrace up the beach to ring the bell and officially finish.
