Help name new SAR aircraft

A long-dormant air squadron will fly again out of Vancouver Island.

The Royal Canadian Air Force says its 418 Squadron, a former fighter-bomber squadron based out of Edmonton, will be reformed as a search and rescue training squadron at CFB Comox.

The squadron will train aircrew and maintenance workers assigned to Canada's new CC-295 search and rescue planes, CTV News reports.

The government ordered 16 of the aircraft from Airbus in 2016 to replace its Buffalo and Hercules search and rescue planes.

The first CC-295 is expected to be delivered from Spain later this year. The new aircraft will be stationed at Comox, Winnipeg, Trenton and Greenwood.

Meanwhile, the RCAF is asking the public to help name the aircraft and has short listed five approved names – Canso II, Guardian, Iris, Kingfisher and Turnstone.

The winning name is expected to be announced in the coming months.

The squadron will begin operations next year.
