Dam tower crashes down

One of what were once the tallest towers on Vancouver Island came crashing down Friday.

The first of three surge towers at the John Hart dam in Campbell River was brought down in a controlled demolition, says BC Hydro.

The 90-metre tower will be dismantled and the steel recycled, with the second tower's demolition scheduled for next week, CTV News reports.

The third tower will remain in place, as it holds valuable communication equipment and serves as a beacon for the local airport.

In operation from 1947 to 2018, the towers protected hydro-electric equipment from rapid water pressure changes.
