Witness sought in fatal crash

Police in Coquitlam are looking to speak with a man who may have witnessed a serious crash last March that killed a 13-year-old girl.

The crash occurred on March 25, just before 3 p.m., when a Dodge Charger and a BMW sedan crashed into each other at the intersection of Mariner Way and Riverview Crescent. The BMW spun into a raised traffic island where five children were standing.

The 13-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy were hit and taken to hospital with serious injuries. The young girl later succumbed to her injuries.

On Wednesday, Coquitlam RCMP reached out to the public, in the hopes of finding and speaking with a “potentially important witness” who was stopped on Riverview Crescent when the crash occurred.

“It’s important that we speak to absolutely everyone who was at the scene,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with the Coquitlam RCMP.

“This witness may not think he saw anything important, but we will leave no stone unturned to determine what caused the collision that took the life of a young girl.”

Police describe the witness as an Asian man with a slim build, short, black hair and glasses. He was driving a white Toyota RAV4.

Police are emphasizing that the man is not suspected of committing any crime, but they would like to know what he saw.

The Coquitlam RCMP can be reached at 604-945-1550.
