End near for carriages?

Victoria city council will debate whether to phase out commercial horse-drawn carriages in the city.

The motion by Coun. Ben Isitt would eliminate the capital's iconic carriages by 2030 also suggests the city explore replacing them with electric carriages.

“This proposal responds to long-standing concerns for greater safety on local roads,” Isitt told CTV News. “Specifically, horse-drawn carriages are an outmoded form of transportation in our 21st-century city.”

The horse-carriage industry is not happy, claiming Isitt's motion "ignores facts, evidence ... BC SPCA recommendations and the voices of the public majority,” says Donna Friedlander, owner of Tally-Ho Carriage Tours.

After an incident last year in which a bus hit a carriage, the SPCA recommended Victoria prohibit operation of the carriages on city streets and limit them to parks.

Council will consider the motion on Thursday.
