The investigation into a fatal plane crash in northern British Columbia continues on Sunday as the Transportation Safety Board of Canada is sending a team of investigators to the site of the crash.

On Saturday, a Cessna 182 aircraft crashed about 100 kilometres northeast of Smithers.

At about 8:45 a.m. an emergency notification was sent to the Victoria Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

A Cormorant Search and Rescue helicopter and Buffalo Search and Rescue fixed-wing aircraft from 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron out of CFB Comox and a helicopter from Canadian Helicopters out of Smithers were dispatched to the scene.

Just before 3 p.m., search and rescue technicians were inserted into the crash site and the investigation was handed over to the RCMP.

Lt. Melissa Kia said the JRCC's priority is to locate victims and save lives through air and maritime SAR.

"When this portion is complete and successful, or if we have exhausted the reasonable expectation of finding a SAR victim alive through survivability compilation or through physical evidence, a case is then turned over to the proper authority for completion," said Kia.

The aircraft can carry four people, but police wouldn’t confirm the number of victims or identities just that is was a fatal crash.

In a statement, the TSB says they will gather information and assess the occurrence on Sunday.

Castanet News contacted Smithers RCMP but were not provided any further details.

The TSB is an independent agency that investigates transportation occurrences with the sole aim is the advancement of transportation safety.
