Cougar spotted near school

Students and parents in Nanaimo are on edge after a cougar was spotted near an elementary school.

Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools have sent out a notification to parents of Uplands Elementary School after reports of a cougar sighting in the area.

Conservation officer Stuart Bates tells CTV News the conservation authority got the call at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday after a homeowner reported seeing two large eyes tracking them from the woods.

The notification indicates that school children should not be allowed to walk through the forest area until further notice.

Cougar sightings are fairly common in this area and on Vancouver Island in general, this is the sixth cougar sighting this month in the Nanaimo area.
