Hockey, friendship rule

In a span of 12 short hours, a pee wee hockey team in Cranbrook went from the lowest of lows, to the highest of highs.

The Cranbrook Friendship Hockey team had been raising money for well over a year for the journey of a lifetime, a trip to the Peewee International Friendship Hockey Tournament in Japan later this month.

Those hopes were dashed, or so they thought, when they learned last Friday of "some serious misappropriation of funds by a trusted volunteer."

More than $30,000 had been taken from the team's travel fund, putting their trip in jeopardy just 12 days before they were scheduled to leave.

The information was turned over to the RCMP for investigation.

The team then took to Facebook to tell their story.

Within hours, the communities of Cranbrook and Kimberly responded.

"Our Cranbrook, Kimberley and surrounding communities have been so amazing. In 12 short hours, donations have been made & committed to our team of approximately $22,140. We are overwhelmed with gratitude from everyone’s generosity. Thank you so very much. Our 2019 Cranbrook Friendship Hockey Team is now back in a position to be able to have the trip we originally planned for the boys. Thank you doesn’t seem like enough, but THANK YOU!!!"
