UBC team's thrifty racer

A UBC-engineered vehicle placed second in an international fuel-efficient vehicle competition.

The 65-member Supermileage team competed in the "fuelathon" at Sonoma Raceway in California.

Its Mark XI vehicle competed against entries from around the world, achieving 1371mpg and coming second in its class, CTV News reports.

The three-wheeled, single-passenger vehicle was designed and built by technical students from disciplines including mechanical, geological, eng-physics, integrated, electrical, civil, materials engineering as well as business and science.

Each team's car had to make eight laps of the track in 24 minutes.

The Mark XI is powered by a modified Briggs & Stratton Junior206 engine displacing 120 ccs.
