Hwy 3 reopened, for now

UPDATE: 10:55 p.m.

Despite earlier reports that Kootenay Pass would remain closed through the night, it has been reopened to single-lane, alternating traffic between Creston and the junction with Highway 6, south of Salmo.

The fatal fuel tanker truck crash had closed Highway 3 since Wednesday night, but it was reopened just before 10 p.m. Thursday.

Those needing to get through only have until 8 a.m. though, as the highway will be closed in the morning to allow for recovery of the crashed truck.

DriveBC estimates the highway will be fully reopened by 2 p.m. Friday.

UPDATE: 9:15 p.m.

Highway 3 remains closed through Kootenay Pass after a fatal, single-vehicle crash closed the highway Wednesday night.

The crash of the two-tanker fuel truck killed the driver, who was from Alberta, and a "significant" amount of diesel and gasoline was spilled into the Salmo River.

The highway is expected to remain closed through Thursday evening, and DriveBC estimates it could open by 9 a.m. Friday.

A detour north along Highway 3A has resulted in delays of more than 10 hours at the Balfour Ferry, but the ferry will remain running through the night to deal with the demand.

UPDATE: 4:15 p.m.

Police say the driver of a tanker truck was killed and a "significant" amount of fuel was spilled in a single-vehicle crash on Wednesday night.

RCMP Cpl. Mike Halskov says the two-tanker truck was carrying gasoline and diesel, and the tankers ruptured as a result of the crash.

RCMP investigators were called to the crash scene on Highway 3 at 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

Drive BC says the bottom of Kootenay Pass was closed in both directions and is expected to open Friday.

Investigators say they were hampered by the fuel spill in the Salmo River but determined the driver of the vehicle, who was from Alberta, had died.

Police say environmental emergency response is assessing the situation and will determine when it is safe for the police to enter the area and resume the investigation.

Interior Health says the incident resulted in fuel contamination in the South Salmo River but there is a low risk to public health.

The agency is asking residents who get their water from the river between the bottom of Kootenay Pass and the Salmo River at the United States border to check their water for any signs of diesel fuel including sheen or fuel odour.

They are also asking people not to use the water for recreational purposes.

ORIGINAL: 10:30 a.m.

A fatal crash involving a “significant” fuel spill in the Salmo River has closed Highway 3 through the Kootenay Pass until at least Friday morning.

RCMP were initially called to a single-vehicle crash on Highway 3 Wednesday at 8:20 p.m. on the western end of the Kootenay Pass near Salmo.

“Investigators were hampered by a significant fuel spill in the Salmo River, but have confirmed the driver of the vehicle from Alberta was the lone occupant and he is deceased,” said Sgt. Chad Badry of West Kootenay Traffic Services.

The provincial government says a tractor hauling twin tankers carrying diesel and gasoline crashed into the river about two kilometres east of the Highway 3 and Highway 6 junction.

A spill response team arrived on site early this morning. It’s not yet clear exactly how much fuel spilled into the river.

DriveBC estimates Highway 3 will reopen between Creston and Salmo at 9 a.m. Friday. A detour is available using Highway 3A and the Kootenay Lake Ferry, but lineups are expected because the ferry is running on its reduced winter schedule.
