43 ODs in just one night

First responders in Vancouver were called to 43 overdoses in just one night last week.

Deputy Fire Chief Tyler Moore said on Twitter the OD calls all came in overnight Friday, CTV News reports.

Meanwhile, the Vancouver firefighters union received 75 calls in 24 hours in the Downtown Eastside.

"Sadly, many of those were drug overdose calls," the union tweeted.

BC Coroners Service stats show three people die from illicit drug overdoses every day in British Columbia. But the crisis may be waning.

The 90 deaths in January were the fewest deaths per month since 2016.

"I'm hopeful that maybe we're turning the corner… Cautious optimism," Andy Watson of the BC Coroners Service told CTV.
