Dramatic ice rescue

Good Samaritans rushed to the aid of two boys on a frozen lake in Coquitlam, Thursday.

The two 10 year olds were on the ice in the River Springs area when homeowner Mitch Muir noticed one of the boys had fallen in.

“I realized there was a second child, and he’d actually fallen through the ice. I just saw his head pop up out of the water," Muir told CTV News

He grabbed a ladder while a neighbour tried to reach the boys in a kayak.

Muir and a passer-by walking a dog laid out the ladder and "shimmied our way out there as best we could,” Muir said. The boy grabbed a rung of the ladder, and they pulled him to shore.

"It was kind of getting desperate there for a bit ... (the boy) was sort of struggling, and I guess the ice was kind of breaking around him."

The second boy made it to shore on his own.
